Two relaunches, a design system and a paywall for a regional news portal

suedostschweiz.ch is the regional news portal of the Chur-based media house Somedia. I have shaped its UX design through two relaunches, a design system and the routes to a subscription.

What the portal needed

Readers open the news on screens of every size, so a news portal has to read well on all of them. Südostschweiz wanted a clear, calm design and a simple route from reading to paying.

Design work since 2016

I have done UX design for Somedia since 2016. The first redesign launched in 2017 with a new concept and look, centred on the homepage and responsive layouts. Roughly four years later the portal was refreshed again, giving readers more space and focus.

Editors choose from several homepage templates to suit the day’s news. A major story gets a large teaser.

For the 2021 relaunch I also built a full design system. All elements are documented, so design, development and the newsroom share one reference.

Buying an article in place

A reader who reaches a paid article can purchase it on the spot with their login, separately from the standard subscription shop. It takes two clicks, then reading continues.

The subscription shop

In 2019 I redesigned the entire subscription shop for digital, e-paper and print. Readers compare the offers next to each other and order in fewer steps, which leads to fewer support requests.
