A browser-based career portal for the canton of Zürich

The Berufswahl-Portal guides teenagers in Zürich toward a career and involves parents, teachers and companies. I handled design and frontend.

Starting point

For five years the canton’s career-choice app existed only in the app stores. The Department of Education now wanted a portal that opens in any browser, for teenagers, parents, teachers and career advisers alike.

My part

I designed the portal and built its frontend. Behind it runs headless WordPress, which pulls professions, companies, trial apprenticeships and events from databases that already exist. Most content therefore stays current without manual entry.

In class, an interest test comes first. Its result is a profile that suggests careers worth a closer look. Teenagers sign in with a magic link, so no password has to be remembered.

The interest check and the career radar

Later phases added company profiles. From there a teenager can request a trial apprenticeship directly. A blog, a career radar and an overview of secondary schools came after that.

Where it stands

Teachers in the canton have used the portal in career lessons since summer 2019. I extend it phase by phase, request by request.
