A redesigned site and a door scanner app for a Zürich club

Kaufleuten is a club, culture venue and restaurant in Zürich. I designed and built its frontend, and I made the web app that scans tickets at the door.

Context

For more than 100 years Kaufleuten has been part of Zürich’s nightlife and culture: club nights, concerts, readings and a restaurant. Its website has to show what is on tonight and still feel like the venue itself.

The website

I worked on the design and frontend of the site, and on internal apps the team uses behind the scenes.

I redesigned the site mobile first. The restaurant and culture pages are light and easy to read. The club pages are dark, setting the mood for the night. Tickets and vouchers are paid for on the site and arrive as a PDF with a QR code.

Buying a ticket on the phone, step by step

Scanning tickets

Once payment was integrated on the site, Kaufleuten wanted faster entry at the door. I built a web app that scans tickets in real time and checks them against the club’s own event management tool. It runs on phones and tablets.

Every scan shows who bought the ticket and updates the count of guests inside. During Covid this live count helped the club stay within capacity rules and answer the authorities at any time.

Testing and upkeep

The app was tested at the club on a real night. We watched how lighting and the pace of the door staff affected scanning. Errors went to Sentry, which let me fix problems before the next event.
